Honoring America’s Volunteers |
After 9/11, President Bush called on all Americans to serve their communities, their Nation, and their world. In his 2002 State of the Union Address, he announced the creation of USA Freedom Corps and also called for every American to commit at least 2 years (4,000 hours) to the service of their neighbors and their nation. Today, the President will host an event on the South Lawn to highlight USA Freedom Corps and to honor America's volunteers who serve at home and abroad.

Tee Ball on the South Lawn: A Salute to the Troops Game |
In 2001, President Bush launched Tee Ball on the South Lawn to encourage fitness among America’s youth and promote our national pastime to people of all ages. On Sunday, after eight great seasons, the President hosted the 20th and final game of his presidency. |

President Bush traveled to Louisiana to visit the Emergency Operations Center in Baton Rouge in the wake of Hurricane Gustav.

President's Radio Address- In his weekly radio address President Bush said, "Throughout the past week, Americans anxiously watched weather conditions in the Gulf Coast region. The people of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas were well prepared for Hurricane Gustav -- and the coordination between these States and the Federal government was strong."

President Bush on Wednesday said, "I can't thank you all enough for working as hard as you are. ...The people of your state care a lot about the fact that you are working as hard as you are. And if this helps you keep going, I want to thank you, and I want to thank all the volunteers and the faith-based community that always rises up in a challenge like this. They listen to that universal call to love a neighbor like you'd like to be loved yourself. And that's happening here in Louisiana again. And this storm should not cause the members of Congress to say, well, we don't need to address our energy independence; it ought to cause the Congress to step up their need to address our dependence on foreign oil.
